Sailing Engagement Session – Heather & Dylan

Posted in Couple Sessions

Sailing Engagement Session

When your clients tell you that their hobby is RACING SAILBOATS… you insist on a sailing engagement session!!!

I really encourage my couples to make their engagement session photos as meaningful as possible. I ask questions like, ‘what do you like to do together?’, and ‘is there a significant place to your relationship’, i.e. where did you meet, etc. It’s important to me that you look back on your engagement photos and they speak to your relationship. So, yes, when Heather and Dylan told me they race sailboats, we were all over it!

My favourite story I heard on this sailing engagement session, was that Heather actually proposed to Dylan! Way to go Heather for breaking down gender norms! It was a really sweet story about a big day she had planned, but how her nerves kept getting in the way, so as the day unfolded, she kept putting it off. Dylan thought something was up because Heather was acting a bit strange all day. Finally, at the VERY end of the day, with the courage of a cocktail or two, she came out with it and asked him if he would marry her :). I admire Heather’s resolve and bravery in doing something outside of cultural norms :).

I’d never been on a racing sailboat before, so this was very fun for me. I loved watching Heather and Dylan work the boat together, and I had a blast crawling around the tiny vessel, trying not to fall in to the ocean, LOL. I learned a lot about sailboat racing customs that include a lot of rum, and funny costumes ;). Overall, I had a really great time getting to know Heather and Dylan. Thank you so much you two for taking me out to sea for my very first sailing engagement session!
